Three-Pump Provenance: why AAA, EIA and GasBuddy disagree

The three numbers you see quoted in the news come from three different methods, each of which lags reality differently.

  • EIA [EIA · 13 Jul 2026] surveys roughly 800 stations every Monday morning; release lands Monday afternoon ET. State series exist for the 10 largest states only. Authoritative for national and PADD averages.
  • AAA [AAA · 13 Jul 2026] aggregates daily OPIS feeds from over 60,000 stations. Updated each morning around 5 a.m. ET. Best for state and metro detail.
  • GasBuddy [GB · 13 Jul 2026] is crowdsourced - real consumers report pump prices from their app. Highest sample but a small bias toward fuel-hunters in metro areas.

When the three disagree by more than 5 cents, the EIA weekly tends to be the slowest-moving anchor and GasBuddy the fastest. We show the per-row source so you know which one is talking.

By PADD region

The EIA splits the US into five Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts. Each district has its own crude supply, refining base, and pricing personality.

PADD 1 - East Coast

From Maine to Florida. Sub-PADDs 1A (New England), 1B (Central Atlantic) and 1C (Lower Atlantic). Heating-oil correlation in winter.

PADD 2 - Midwest

From North Dakota to Kentucky. Mid-continent refining base; corn-belt ethanol availability shapes pump prices.

PADD 3 - Gulf Coast

avg $3.54

Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, New Mexico. Half of US refining capacity sits here.

PADD 4 - Rocky Mountain

avg $3.91

Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming. Small isolated refining footprint; prices track local rack rather than national.

PADD 5 - West Coast

avg $4.79

Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington. Isolated market; California specifications dominate the regional rack.
