Nevada vs Arizona gas prices

In the EIA survey week of August 31, 2026 the federal weekly retail price covering both states, West Coast less California, was $4.823 per gallon. EIA does not price Nevada or Arizona separately, so there is no measured state gap here to quote. What is different, and documented, is the tax stack and the blend requirement. [EIA · 31 Aug 2026]

What the federal survey settles here. EIA prices neither Nevada nor Arizona on its own. Both sit inside West Coast less California, so the week of August 31, 2026 gives them the same published figure of $4.823 per gallon. There is no state-level gap in this dataset to report, and we are not going to model one. What is genuinely different between the two states is the tax stack, which is set in statute and covered below.

What the survey does cover

EIA's weekly retail gasoline survey publishes a figure for the United States, five PADDs, three PADD 1 sub-districts, West Coast less California, ten metro areas and nine states. Nevada and Arizona are not among the nine, and neither has an EIA metro series. The district figure above, series EMM_EPMR_PTE_R5XCA_DPG, also covers Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

Where the two states genuinely differ

  • State excise. Nevada 23 cents per gallon, Arizona 18 cents. A 5.00-cent statutory difference, worth $0.90 on an 18-gallon fill before any local levy. Source: API Motor Fuel Tax Map and Tax Foundation, not EIA.
  • Local levies. Clark County adds its own fuel taxes and environmental fees on top of the Nevada rate; Maricopa County does not levy an equivalent.
  • Blend. The Las Vegas and Phoenix metros both run cleaner summer blends than the rural counties in either state, which raises summer cost in both metros.
  • Supply. Neither state refines at scale. Both draw on California and Salt Lake product, which is the structural reason they share a federal district in the first place.

Planning a US-93 or I-40 fill-up

The federal weekly data cannot tell you which side of the state line is cheaper on a given day, and this site will not pretend otherwise. Check pump prices on the route. What the data does support is the direction of the tax difference, which is stable and in Arizona's favour by 5.00 cents a gallon at the state level.
