EIA Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update, survey week of August 31, 2026. Snapshot pulled 2026-09-06. Weekly refresh.

Cheapest diesel on I-80, I-10, I-40, I-70 and I-95 today

OTR drivers running the five main US corridors cross several EIA districts on a single haul, and the district gaps are large enough to be worth planning around. EIA prices California directly for diesel and everywhere else by region, so the state figures below are district readings unless the state is California. Cheapest crossings this week: North Carolina on I-40, West Virginia on I-70, Florida on I-10. [EIA · 31 Aug 2026]

I-95 (Maine to Florida)

The eastern seaboard runs Maine ($5.74 diesel) southward through NH, MA, CT, NY, NJ, DE, MD, DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, to Florida ($5.28). Cheapest buy point on the corridor: Virginia ($5.28); priciest: District of Columbia ($5.84). The Maryland tax stack makes the Delaware-Maryland transition ($5.84 vs $5.84) consistently worth timing.

I-80 (San Francisco to New York)

Transcontinental I-80 crosses California ($7.22), Nevada ($5.87), Utah ($5.55), Wyoming ($5.55), Nebraska ($5.57), Iowa ($5.57), Illinois ($5.57), Indiana ($5.57), Ohio ($5.57), Pennsylvania ($5.84), New Jersey ($5.84). Cheapest tank: Utah ($5.55). Most expensive: California ($7.22).

I-70 (Utah to Maryland)

Mid-band corridor. Cheapest tank: West Virginia ($5.28), then Missouri ($5.57). Most expensive: Maryland ($5.84).

I-40 (Barstow to Wilmington)

I-40 hits California ($7.22), Arizona ($5.87), New Mexico ($5.36), Texas ($5.36), Oklahoma ($5.57), Arkansas ($5.36), Tennessee ($5.57), North Carolina ($5.28). The Texas-Oklahoma-Arkansas stretch is the cheapest long run for diesel on the route; North Carolina ($5.28) is the single cheapest crossing.

I-10 (Los Angeles to Jacksonville)

I-10 runs the Sun Belt. Cheapest tanks: Texas ($5.36), Louisiana ($5.36), Mississippi ($5.36), Alabama ($5.36). The California end ($7.22) is the priciest segment.

IFTA notes

Quarterly IFTA filings recalculate fuel tax owed to each jurisdiction by miles driven; cheap buy points can still incur tax true-up. The IFTA Quarterly Tax Matrix sets the current state-by-state diesel surcharge rates.
