Highest gas price ever and the lowest 25-year low
The highest US national average regular gasoline price in the EIA weekly retail survey is $5.006 per gallon, the week of 2022-06-13. The lowest is $0.907, the week of 1999-02-22. Both are nominal dollars, drawn from every one of the 1,875 weekly observations EIA has published since 1990-08-20 in series EMM_EPMR_PTE_NUS_DPG. Why there is no fifty-state record table here
The EIA weekly survey has never priced most states, so there is no federal record high or low to quote for them. Records exist only for the nine states EIA surveys and for the districts. Anything claiming an all-time high for, say, Mississippi is quoting a commercial daily average under a different methodology, and this site does not mix the two.
What caused the extremes
- 1979-1980 Iran revolution spike (peak inflation-adjusted era).
- Aug 2005 Katrina: 11-cent overnight jump.
- Jun 2008: $147 crude peak.
- Apr 2020 COVID: WTI briefly traded negative and retail fell hard, though not to the series low above, which predates it.
- Jun 2022 Russia-Ukraine: the nominal all-time weekly peak in this series, $5.006.
