EIA diesel survey methodology
EIA's Weekly On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price (WHDFP) is the universal anchor for US diesel pricing. Roughly 360 retail outlets across eight regions are surveyed each Monday morning, with results published the same afternoon. [EIA · 31 Aug 2026]
Survey design
EIA samples retail outlets stratified by EIA region. The eight regions roughly track the PADDs with sub-PADD detail for PADD 1 and 5. National average is a volume-weighted aggregate.
Release schedule
Monday 5 p.m. ET (except federal holidays, in which case Tuesday).
Why this site uses it and nothing else
Commercial feeds such as AAA and GasBuddy publish a distinct daily number for every state; the federal survey does not. The trade is coverage against provenance. We take provenance: one public-domain source, the series id printed next to the number, and an explicit gap where the survey has none. A commercial daily figure and the federal weekly figure will not agree, and averaging them would produce a number neither publisher stands behind.
What that costs you
For diesel, EIA prices the United States, the five PADDs, three PADD 1 sub-districts, West Coast less California, and California. Every other state on this site therefore carries its district figure. If you need a state-level daily diesel price, a commercial feed is the right tool and we will not pretend to be one.
